Alternative words to “In the Garden”

The hymn In the Garden has always seemed too experiential and self-reflective to me. I think I share this concern with many. The hymn’s original words were written after the writer had a vision of what Mary Magdalene experienced at seeing the risen Christ.

However, as the original hymn lacked doctrine, I took the task of making it a hymn of praise to the risen Savior.

The tune is familiar, and is in the public domain. Hear it on CyberHymnal

The Servant Christ
Ray Bromley, 2013 (put in public domain by author, 2013)

1
Christ left His great throne room above,
and took on the form of a servant,
By the Father’s plan, He became a man,
to ev’ry law observant.

(Chorus:)
The great price He paid, our salvation made,
As He purchased us for His own!
So we’ll sing His praise, through this earthly phase,
’till gathered at His throne.

2
Despised and rejected by men,
He became acquainted with sorrows.
But His suff’ring here, was to draw us near,
for now and all tomorrows.

(Chorus:)
The great price He paid, our salvation made,
As He purchased us for His own!
So we’ll sing His praise, through this earthly phase,
’till gathered at His throne.

3
He went to Golgotha for us,
Who were dead in sins and trespasses,
And the love He showed, when His life- blood flowed,
No other love surpasses.

(Chorus:)
The great price He paid, our salvation made,
As He purchased us for His own!
So we’ll sing His praise, through this earthly phase,
’till gathered at His throne.

4
He lay in the earth for three days,
as a sign to His generation.
Then from death He rose, seen by those He chose,
for our justification.

(Chorus:)
The great price He paid, our salvation made,
As He purchased us for His own!
So we’ll sing His praise, through this earthly phase,
’till gathered at His throne.

5
He rose and was taken above,
at the right hand of God He’s seated.
And for us He pleads; meeting all our needs;
His grace never depleted.

(Chorus:)
The great price He paid, our salvation made,
As He purchased us for His own!
So we’ll sing His praise, through this earthly phase,
’till gathered at His throne.

6
His name is above every name;
Offer to Lord Jesus all praises!
Ev’ry knee will bend; His praise shall not end,
as all the dead He raises.

(Chorus:)
The great price He paid, our salvation made,
As He purchased us for His own!
So we’ll sing His praise, through this earthly phase,
’till gathered at His throne.

Alternate fourth verse:
He lay in the earth for three days,
to fulfill the words of the Scripture.
Then from death He rose, seen by those He chose,
for our righteousness to secure.

(Chorus:)
The great price He paid, our salvation made,
As He purchased us for His own!
So we’ll sing His praise, through this earthly phase,
’till gathered at His throne.
